Wagner Swimming In Third After Day One Of NEC Championship Competition

New Haven, CT- The Wagner College women's swim team finished in third-place after the first day of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships at Yale University. Day one was highlighted by the Seahawks two relay events the 200 freestyle relay, which placed second and the 400 medley relay, which took third. 

The 200 freestyle relay, which comprised of senior Jessica Hart (Montreal, Canada / Northwest), sophomore Jakki Guenther (South Hadley, MA / South Hadley HS), sophomore Lauren Meyer (Hamden, CT / Hamden HS) and junior Sarah Plucinsky (Allentown, PA / Allentown Central Catholic) finished second with a time of 1:37.42. 

In the 500 freestyle, freshman Dana Samuel (Rivonia/ South Africa / Crawford College) finished in 13th place with a personal best time of 5:17.73 while sophomore Mary Ryan (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph Hill Academy) also completed the event with a career best time of 5:21.27, besting her previous mark of 5:36.44. 

In the third event of the competition, the 200 IM Guenther paced the pack of Seahawk competitors with a fourth-place finish in 2:10.10. Following Guenther with career best times was freshman Alanna Gibbons (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech) (2:14.04), senior Melanie Rodriguez-Lapman (Chesire, CT / Chesire) (2:12.39), sophomore Breanne Sweeney (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) (2:14.81) and sophomore Patricia Gavin (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech) (2:19.33). 

Hart notched a fourth-place finish in the 50 freestyle, clocking in at 24.17. Taking seventh, ninth and 10th was Plucinsky (25.12), Meyer (25.18) and freshman Amber Weech (Nassau, Bahamas / Saint Augustine's) (25.31), respectively. 

In the final event of the day, the Green & White received a third-place mark from the 400 medley relay team of Guenther, Gavin, Hart and Plucinsky, touching in at 3:56.33. 

Wagner will continue action tomorrow, February 12th with day two NEC Championships. Preliminary events begin at 10:00 am with finals starting at 6:00 pm.
