Wagner Tops NJIT 7-2

Junior Brian Miller (Pittsburgh, PA / North Hills) picked up his first collegiate win, striking out four over 5.0 innings in the Seahawks' 7-2 win over NJIT in non-conference action at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. With the victory, the Green & White improve to 24-17 while the Highlanders fall to 4-29.

Junior Damian Csakai (Freehold Township, NJ / Freehold Township), sophomore Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) and junior Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) combined to go 5-8 with five runs, four RBI, three doubles and one home run to lead the way on offense.

After Miller retired NJIT in order in the top of the first, Wagner struck for a single run in the bottom part of the frame. Martutartus doubled with one out before stealing third, The speedy shortstop crossed the plate on a Avella sacrifice fly.

The Highlanders evened up the score at 1-1 on Bryan Bleakley's solo home run to right center with one out in the top of the second inning. NJIT took its first lead of the game at 2-1 in the top of third on PJ Saporito's RBI ground out.

The Seahawks immediately answered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the third. Junior Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) reached on a two-base error by the right fielder. After stealing third, Conforti was brought around on a Martutartus sacrifice fly. Avella followed with his NEC-best 14th home run of the year, a line-drive shot over the left-field fence, to give the Green & White a 3-2 lead.

Wagner extended the lead out to 6-2 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Matt Logan (Wall, NJ / Wall) led off with a single and was bunted over to second by Conforti. Logan advanced to third on a fly out before scoring on Martutartus' second double over of the game. Martutartus would eventually come around on a failed pick off. Sophomore Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) concluded the scoring with a RBI single to left field, plating Avella.

The Seahawks completed the scoring with a run in the bottom of the seventh, extending the lead out to 7-2 on a Drechsel RBI ground out.

Miller struck out four while yielding just two runs on five hits and a walk over 5.0 innings. Four other Wagner pitchers combined to strike out five while yielding two hits and two walks over the final 4.0 innings. Saporito (3-7) took the loss for NJIT, yielding six runs, four earned, on seven hits while striking out one over 5.0 innings.

Martutartus was 2-2 with two doubles, two runs, three stolen bases and one walk while Avella finished up 1-1 with a home run, two RBI and two intentional walks.

Wagner returns to action on Friday, May 8 when the Seahawks head to Sacred Heart. First pitch is slated for 7:00 pm at Trumbell High School.
