Junior Kyle Morrison improved to 7-2 on the year
BOX SCORE

Brooklyn, NY –
Sophomores Joe Jamison (West Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell) and Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) each hit two-run home runs while junior Kyle Morrison (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) turned in a gutty five-inning performance to lead Wagner (21-17; 10-7 NEC) to an 8-4 win over Long Island (9-31; 5-12 NEC) in game one of today's doubleheader at LIU Field.

Morrison struck out three while scattering three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks over 5.0 innings to improve to 7-2 on the year. LIU's James Jones fell to 1-8 on the year, yielding six runs, five earned, on nine hits and a walk while striking out three.

The Blackbirds took their first lead of the weekend in the top of the second with a single run. Gerard Tingos led off with a single before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. After scoring on a throwing error by Morrison, LIU loaded up the bases with one out. After going to a 3-2 count on Jones, Morrison got the two-way talent to pop up before inducing an inning-ending ground out.

The Seahawks finally got to Jones in the top of the fourth inning. Boyd and sophomore Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) reached via infield singles. Boyd tied the game up at 1-1, advancing to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an errant throw by the catcher. Sophomore Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) then collected an infield single of his own, giving Wagner at the corners with one out. The Green & White then assumed a 2-1 lead on Matt Logan's (Wall, NJ / Wall) fielder's choice to second, in which Martutartus stopped so as to not be tagged, allowing Logan to reach safely and pinch-runner freshman Brian Battaglia (Howell, NJ / Howell) to score. Jamison followed with a two-run home run to left field, his first of the year, extending the Wagner lead out to 4-1.

LIU immediately answered in the bottom of the fourth, loading up the bases with no outs. Julian Kenner cut it to 4-2 with a sacrifice fly before Jones sliced the deficit to 4-3 with a RBI single to left field. However that would be as close as the Blackbirds would get as Morrison induced an inning-ending double play.

Wagner got those runs back in the top of the sixth on sophomore Jared Gruccio's (Landisville, NJ / Buena Regional) two-out two-run single up the middle, plating Logan and junior Damian Csakai (Freehold Township, NJ / Freehold Township) to extend the lead out to 6-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, LIU scored an unearned run to get to within 6-4 and had the bases loaded with two outs, only to see senior Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) induce an inning-ending fly out.

The Green & White added to the lead on Boyd's two-run home run to right field, scoring senior Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford), who had doubled to lead off the top of the seventh.

Huebner then closed the door on LIU with a hitless ninth that included a pair of strikeouts for his ninth save of the year in as many chances. The hard-throwing right-handed pitcher struck out three over 2.0 hitless innings.

Eight different Seahawks hit safely as Wagner rapped out 11 hits. Boyd led the onslaught going 2-4 with a home run and two runs while Jamison was 2-2 with a two-run home run.
