Wagner Clinches NEC Playoff Berth While Winning School-Record 28th Game

Junior Damian Csakai went 3-3 while scoring the game's only run
BOX SCORE

Staten Island, NY –
Junior RHP Kyle Morrison (Middlesex, NJ / Immauculata) fired 6.0 shutout innings to lead Wagner (28-19; 15-9 NEC) to a 1-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (16-32; 11-15 NEC) in the first of two games at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. With the win, the Seahawks clinched a spot in the upcoming Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament while setting a school-record with their 28th win of the year, breaking the previous record of 27 set last year.

Lost in the shuffle was the performance of senior Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA North Penn). The hard-throwing right-handed pitcher set a school-record with his 12th save of the year, in as many chances, breaking his own mark of 11 set last year.

Morrison improved to 8-2, striking out three while scattering three hits and two walks while throwing just 73 pitches over 6.0 scoreless innings. Huebner then hurled a scoreless seventh to close out the Seahawks' second-straight one-run win.

During conference play, 17 of Wagner's 24 games have been decided by two runs or less with the Green & White going 11-6 in those games, including 6-4 in one-run games.

Junior Damian Csakai (Freehold Township, NJ / Freehold Township) manufactured the game's only run in the bottom of the third. After reaching on an opposite-field single to right field with one out, the speedy centerfielder moved to second on a failed pick-off attempt by the pitcher. Sophomore Jared Gruccio (Landisville, NJ Buena Regional) advanced Csakai to third with a successful sacrifice bunt. Junior Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) then reached via a walk. On the ensuing play, Avella took a big lead off of first base, drawing a throw from Knight starter LHP John Meadus. Csakai then broke for and stole home, giving the Green & White a 1-0 lead.

Fairleigh Dickinson had an opportunity to tie the game up in the top of the seventh. Joe Martino was hit by a pitch with two outs. Mike Eliason then laid down a perfect bunt single to third base. However, on the play pinch-runner Patrick Furey attempted to go to third and was easily tagged out by Gruccio.

Csakai recorded three of the Green & White's four hits while scoring the game's only run.

Meadus (2-6) was the tough-luck loser, yielding just one unearned run on four hits and three walks while striking out seven.
