Evan Shull (Port Jefferson Station, NY/ Comsewogue) matched his career high with four goals but it was not enough as the Seahawks dropped a 14-6 decision in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this afternoon.
The Hawks went on a decisive 9-0 run spanning the second and third periods in notching the win. Scott Cullinan led Saint Joseph's with four markers and an assist, while Sean Evans scored a hat trick in the team's final home game of the season.
With the game knotted at two apiece and 13:46 remaining in the second period, Saint Joseph's embarked on an 8-0 run in building a 10-2 halftime lead.
Saint Joseph's led in shots 47-23 and picked up five more ground balls, 30-25. SJU won 13-of-23 face-offs, were 15-for-17 on the clear as opposed to the Seahawks' 14-for-20, were 2-for-7 in man-up situations (Wagner 1-for-6) and committed 11 fewer turnovers than the Seahawks (23-12).
Erik Hotaling, who allowed just five goals, had six saves for Saint Joseph's while Griffin Ferrigan (one save), Chase Stewart, and Weston Beard closed out the game in net for the Hawks. Freshman goalie
Peter Rubin (East Rockaway, NY/ East Rockaway) had 12 saves in goal over the first 53:30 of the game before giving way to junior
Michael Gutkin (Freehold, NJ/ Freehold Township) who recorded one save over the game's final 6:30.
In addition to Shull's four-goal afternoon, the Seahawks also received goals from sophomore attack
Will Macumber (Manorvillle, NY/ Eastport South Manor) and freshman attack
Mike Scheerer (West Chester, PA/ Bishop Shanahan).
The Seahawks fall to 1-14 on the season (0-7 in the MAAC) while the Hawks improved to 6-8 overall, 4-4 in the MAAC.
The Seahawks will conclude the 2009 season with a game at Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, April 25 at 1:00 pm.
