Vin Avella's (Matawan, NJ / CBA) RBI walk-off double with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning led Wagner to a 3-2 victory over Saint Peter's in non-conference action at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Seahawks improve to 17-15 while the Peacocks fall to 10-27.
In the bottom of the 13th, sophomore
Jared Gruccio (Landisville, NJ / Buena Regional) laid down a perfectly placed bunt that the third basemen could not field with one out. Avella followed with a double to the right-center gap, scoring Gruccio while securing the Green & White's first walk-off win of the year.
Gruccio paced a nine-hit attack for the Green & White, recording his first career four-hit game with a run and a RBI while reaching base safely five times. Avella was 2-6 with a RBI double and sophomore
Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) also recorded multiple hits, going 2-4 with a run.
Sophomore RHP
Ian Karlsson (Brooklyn, NY / Xaverian) struck out three over 2.0 innings of one-hit ball while improving to 2-1. Junior
Brian Miller (Pittsburgh, PA / North Hills) started and was solid, striking out three over a career-high 6.0 innings of one-run ball. Senior RHP
Kevin Rush (Metuchen, NJ / Metuchen) fired 2.0 innings of scoreless relief and classmate RHP
Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) struck out two over 1.2 perfect frames.
Justyn Carter and Brian Koster each went 3-6 to lead the way for the Peacocks, which recorded 11 hits.
Matt McMahon gave up the winning run in the bottom of the 13th and is now 0-1 on the year. Dom Macaluso started and allowed just two unearned runs on four hits with three strikeouts over 7.0 innings.
Wagner had opportunities to win it in the 11th and 12th innings, but stranded runners in scoring position each time.
Saint Peter's took their only lead of the game in the top of the second on Mike Garcia's run-scoring single to right field.
The Seahawks responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. Lucas led off with a single through the right side. Classmate
Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) walked with an out, putting runners at first and second. Lucas scored on a fielding error by the right fielder, tying the game up at 1-1. Gruccio followed with his second hit of the game, putting the Green & White in front 2-1 with an infield single, scoring Martutartus in the process.
Saint Peter's tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out rally. Sean McFadden doubled down the right field line before Carter brought around McFadden with a single through the left side.
The teams would remain deadlocked until Avella's game-winner in the bottom of the 13th.
