Wagner Blows Out UMBC 15-1 In Game One

Chris Drechsel went 3-4 with a home run and three runs scored

Wagner spoiled UMBC's season-opener while improving to 1-2 on the year with a dominating 15-1 win over the Retrievers. The Seahawks scored their 15 runs on 18 hits as 10 different players hit safely.

After both teams were retired without incident in the first inning, Wagner struck for two unearned runs in the second inning. Senior Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop before being moved over to third on an infield single by sophomore Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy). Classmate Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) brought home Drechsel and reached on a second UMBC error. Freshman Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) completed the scoring with a RBI ground out, plating Boyd to make it 2-0 Wagner.

After the Retrievers stranded a pair in the bottom part of the frame, the Green & White struck for three in the third. Junior Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) hit the first Seahawk home run of the year to left field with one out in the third, extending the lead out to 3-0. Sophomore Joe Jamison (West Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell) followed with a line-drive single up the middle. After UMBC starter LHP Eddie Bach induced a soft liner to second for the second out of the inning, Drechsel blasted a two-run home run to almost the same spot of Avella's long ball, making it 5-0 Wagner.

UMBC got one of the runs back in the bottom of the third on Tom Meaney's RBI single through the right side.

The Green & White put the game way with a five-run fifth inning , sending 11 batters to the plate. Jamison led off with single down the left field line and sophomore Jack Rice (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) followed with his first career home run, a two-run blast to left field. Drechsel kept things rolling with a single up the middle before Boyd doubled him to third. After a strikeout, Higgins brought the pair around with a single to left-center. Wagner tacked on one more run on Jamison's second hit of the inning, a RBI single.

Drechsel opened up the sixth with a single and was eventually brought around on a Higgins ground out, extending the lead to 11-1.

The Green & White tacked on four runs in the seventh inning to provide the final 15-1 tally.

Boyd, Drechsel and Jamison each went 3-4 to lead the way for the Green & White. Drechsel also added four runs and two RBI  with a home run while Boyd scored three times with two RBI. Higgins went 2-5 with a team-best four RBI while Martutartus was 2-5 with two RBI, rounding out the Seahawks with multiple-hits.

Senior RHP Andy Wells (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter's) collected the win, striking out two while yielding just one run on four hits over 6.0 innings in picking up the win.

Wagner's defense was also outstanding, turning three double-plays in the contest while committing just one error.

Meaney went 2-3 with a RBI to pace UMBC. Bach (0-1) struck yielded five runs, three earned, while striking out three and not walking a batter over 4.0 innings.
