Fairfield, CT – Freshman attackman
Mike Hurley (Bellerica, MA/ Bellerica) continued his splendid freshman season by registering a hat trick but it was Sacred Heart that was in control throughout as the Pioneers posted an 18-3 win over the Seahawks.
Hurley is now tied with senior attackman
Evan Shull (Port Jefferson Station, NY/ Comswegue) for the team lead in goals with seven and is second to Shull in points with nine. Shull is the team-leader in points with 11.
With the victory, Sacred Heart improved to 2-4 on the season while the Seahawks saw their season mark fall to 1-5.
David Gannon gave the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead 54 seconds into the contest before Hurley knotted the game at the 13:14 mark off an assist by senior midfielder
Brian Poissant (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius). The Pioneers then went on a roll, scoring six unanswered goals ,bridging the first and second quarter, en route to building a comfortable 8-2 halftime lead. Sacred Heart then put the game out of reach by opening the second half with another six-goal spree.
In addition to Poissant, Shull and freshman midfielder
John Hird (Phoenixville, PA/ The Shipley School) added assists for the Seahawks.
Sacred Heart used balanced scoring in posting the win as five different players scored two goals apiece in Bobby Rushton, Dan Casciano, Jon Flood, Jake Aaron and Matt Ferrino.
Sacred Heart held a 39-28 edge in shots, registered a 46-30 advantage in ground balls, while winning 15-of-25 face-offs. Frank Zack had 11 saves to lead four Pioneer goalies who saw action while freshman
Peter Rubin (East Rockaway, NY/ East Rockaway) stopped seven shots for the Seahawks before giving way to junior
Michael Gutkin (Freehold, NJ/ Freehold Township), who came up with one save in his 12:18 of playing time.
The Seahawks are next in action on Tuesday, March 17 when they meet Robert Morris in a 3:00 pm game in Moon Township, PA.
