FINAL STATS
Staten Island, NY – Wagner jumped out to a 2-1 lead after one quarter but Quinnipiac answered with five consecutive goals to take a 6-2 lead at the half en route to a 13-5 victory in the season opener for both teams.
Wagner came out strong in the third quarter as the Seahawks were outscored by just a 4-3 count. in the opening 15 minutes of the second half before the Bobcats scored the last three goals of the in the final quarter.
Freshman
Mike Hurley (Billerica, MA / Billerica) scored two goals for the Seahawks while
Will Macumber (Manorville, NY/ Eastport South Manor),
Evan Shull (Port Jefferson Station, NY / Comsewogue) and
Marc Payson (Cream Ridge, NJ/ Allentown) added one goalie apiece.
Senior midfielder
Brian Poissant (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) tallied an assist for the Seahawks. Freshman
Peter Rubin (East Rockaway, NY/ East Rockaway) showed excellent poise, reflexes and instincts in the goal in his first collegiate game as many of his 15 saves were from shots fired at pin-point range.
Ted Dimond scored three goals three goals for the Bobcats, who held a 41-23 edge in shots, a 26-22 advantage in ground balls while winning 14-of-23 face-offs. Mike Gast and Kevin Kelly also added a pair of goals each for Quinnipiac while Jack Oppenheimer dished out a team-high four assists. Kevin Benzing made 13 saves to earn the win in net for the Bobcats.
The Seahawks are next in action on Wednesday, February 25 when they host Lafayette in a 3:00 pm faceoff.
