JAMAICA, N.Y. — The Wagner softball team played their last non-conference game of the season against St. John's on Wednesday, dropping the contest 7-3.
The Seahawks opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, when senior first baseman
Geanice Morales came up with the bases loaded and roped an RBI single into right field. Wagner's 1-0 lead was short-lived however, as the Red Storm responded immediately with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. After a lead-off triple and an RBI base hit tied the game, St. John's successfully executed a squeeze play to take a 2-1 lead.
St. John's scored two more runs in the next inning with a two-run single, and the score remained 4-1 until the fifth inning. The Seahawks were able to cut the deficit back down to one when senior left fielder Lea Rachel sent a 1-0 pitch over the wall for a two-run home run.
However, St. John's pitching would hold Wagner scoreless through the last two innings, leaving room for the offense to gain a bigger lead in the bottom of the sixth. A two-run triple and an RBI ground out gave the Red Storm a 7-3 lead which they held until the final out, handing the Seahawks their second straight loss.
The Seahawks will return to the diamond on Saturday, May 2, when they will host Saint Francis for a doubleheader at the Wagner Softball Field. Before the games start, the Seahawks will honor their eight graduating seniors in a pregame ceremony. Afterwards, the first game will start at 1 p.m., and the second game will start at approximately 3 p.m.
