Softball Earns Spot in NEC Tournament with Win Over Saint Francis; Splits Doubleheader

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College softball team took down Saint Francis by a score of 11-3 in Game 1 of its Saturday doubleheader before falling 6-5 in Game 2. With the win, the Seahawks clinched a spot in the 2026 NEC Tournament for the 13th time in program history.

Prior to the game, eight seniors were honored for their dedication to the program — Geanice Morales, Payton Janicki, Natalie Rodriguez, Jordyn Dulken, Dallas Garcia, Lea Rachal, Brityn Buchanan, and Sophia Schmeglar
 

Game 1: Wagner 11 - Saint Francis 3

Wagner locked up the win in just five innings, scoring three in the bottom of the fifth to seal the win. Freshman Samantha Lotus pitched a complete 5.0 allowing three earned runs on four hits. Lotus struck out five of her 19 batters she faced and earned her ninth win of the year.

Senior Geanice Morales finished the game with three hits, three runs, and one RBI while sophomore Alayna Giampolo, senior Payton Janicki, and freshman Ava Nawrocki added two hits each. 

Senior Sydnie Trujillo led the roster with three RBIs, most notably the game-ending at-bat to score senior Lea Rachal. Eight different Seahawks combined for 13 hits.

 

Game 2: Saint Francis 6 - Wagner 5

Six different arms went into the circle for the Seahawks, as Wagner fell behind 4-1 at the conclusion of the second inning. 

Wagner outscored Saint Francis 4-2 between the third and sixth innings, but could not tie the game by the bottom of the seventh.  Trujillo finished the later game with three hits while Janicki added two hits and two RBIs. Freshman Lanie Doukas added two base knocks as well. 

For the Red Flash, Ella Zoss tossed a complete game for her third win of the year. Both teams left seven on base.

After the two games, the Seahawks sit at 18-26 with an NEC mark of 13-10; meanwhile, Saint Francis is 5-41-1 with a conference record of 5-18.

The Seahawks and the Red Flash finish their series and respective regular seasons with a rubber match on Sunday, May 3 at noon on the Wagner Softball Field. The 2026 NEC Softball Championship will begin on Thursday, May 7.
