GREENWOOD, Ind. — Three players on the Wagner softball team earned spots on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, the organization announced on Tuesday.
The CSC Academic All-District teams recognize the best student-athletes in NCAA divisions I-III, and the NAIA. Nominees must have participated in 75% of all games played, while maintaining a 3.5 GPA. This season, the three selections are sophomore designated player
Alayna Giampolo, senior first baseman
Geanice Morales, and junior third baseman
Sydnie Trujillo.
Giampolo finished the season having played 49 of the Seahawks' 50 games, getting the start in 44. She batted .303 with an OPS of .723 while leading the team with 11 stolen bases, a top-10 mark in the NEC. The East Windsor, NJ native won NEC Player of the Week during the first week of the season, and earned All-NEC First Team honors as a designated player.
Morales became one of two Seahawks to play in every game this season, and the only one to start each game. She finished the year top-10 in the NEC in on-base percentage (.511), walks (33), runs , and hit-by-pitches. During the NEC Tournament, Morales recorded six hits and collected four RBIs, all of which came in the sixth inning or later, to help Wagner win its first ever NEC Softball Championship.
Rounding off the list, Trujillo started in 45 of the 49 games she appeared, and led the team in batting average (.392), OPS (.991), hits (56), and RBIs (41). Trujillo collected three NEC Prime Performer nods, and joined her teammate Giampolo on the All-NEC First Team. During the conference tournament, Trujillo went 7-10 with a home run, three doubles and seven RBIs. Her performance netted her NEC Tournament MVP honors.
