STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner softball team lost the last game of their series against FDU on Tuesday. They remain in third place in the NEC with just three conference games left.
After FDU scored a run on an RBI single in the top of the first inning, Wagner answered right back with a run of their own. After senior left fielder Lea Rachel walked with two outs, she scored all the way from first on a double from junior third baseman
Sydnie Trujillo. The Seahawks added two more runs in the second inning after two RBI hits from senior first baseman
Geanice Morales and sophomore second baseman
Alayna Giampolo.
Wagner held onto that 3-1 lead until the fourth inning, when the Knights scored on a pair of errors from the Seahawks defense. Neither team scored again until the sixth inning, when the Knights took the lead from Wagner in a three-run frame. Two more defensive errors from the Seahawks and three hits from the Knights helped them take a 5-3 lead, which they would hold until the final out.
Throughout the series, both Giampolo and senior shortstop
Payton Janicki each collected five hits and three RBIs. Wagner will have a chance to clinch an NEC Tournament spot with a win and an FDU loss during the final week of conference games on Saturday.
The Seahawks return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 29, when they travel to Queens to take on St. John's at the Red Storm Field. It will be the final non-conference game of the season, and it will start at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
