PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Wagner has now tied its longest win streak of the season, now riding a five-game streak with an 11-6 win on the road at UMES.
The Seahawks have now scored in double digits in four of their last five games. A ten-run seventh inning marks the highest scoring inning for the Seahawks this season, beating the previous high of eight runs in the eighth set earlier in the week on Wednesday, April 22 at Princeton.
It was a pitching duel through five, with both teams scoreless before junior Joseph Mennella hit his tenth home run of the season, a solo shot to left center that gave Wagner a 1-0 lead. With the hit, this is now Mennella's second consecutive season with double-digit home runs. He was a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBIs, a pair of runs scored and a pair of walks.
Wagner finished with its 11 runs on ten hits, finishing with 11 RBIs and 10 walks, stranding just ten on the base paths. UMES also had 10 hits, but the Seahawks' pitchers walked just four and stranded 11 runners. Graduate Lukas Torres was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a run scored and a walk.
Sophomore Matt Sutera had a pair of RBIs in a 1-for-5 day where he scored a run and freshman Brendan McLoughlin was the third Seahawk with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Sophomore Jayden Alvarez, the ever-patient ninth hitter for Wagner, walked three times and scored a pair of runs.
Senior righty Colin Trizuto, in his 11th start of 2026, held the Hawks scoreless through five innings of work, but UMES was able to tie the game in the sixth after an error, hit batter and sacrifice bunt moved Jonathan Gonzalez to third, where he was sent home on a sacrifice fly to tie things up at 1-1. With his 6.2 innings pitched, Trizuto was an out shy of tying his season high but earns the win anyway, now 4-3 this season.
UMES starter Esteban Torres was incredibly efficient against what has been a red-hot Wagner offense, but after 5.0 innings, he was relieved by Henry Clausell, who the Seahawks quickly ambushed to make up for their quiet start to the game. Clausell ultimately allowed nine runs to score on six hits and three walks in his 1.2 innings pitched.
Clausell entered in the top of the sixth and, other than the one-out home run from Mennella, retired the Seahawks with ease, but the same could not be said of the seventh. Junior Josiah Ross led off with a walk then stole second, scoring in the next-at bat on an RBI double from McLoughlin, giving Wagner a 2-1 lead and kickstarting the offense.
Alvarez worked a four-pitch walk, then McLoughlin and Alvarez moved to third and second, respectively, on a bunt single from Torres. Sutera added a single of his own, scoring two runs in McLoughlin and Alvarez. Junior Diego Tavarez pushed Torres home on a fielder's choice play that did not record an out — Sutera reached second on an error by the Hawks' shortstop. The run from Torres put Wagner ahead 5-1.
Mennella added his second extra-base hit of the game on a two-RBI double that cleared the bases, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from junior Dylan Immel. Senior Nicholas Mazzotta pushed across the eighth run for Wagner on an RBI single then stole second, but was caught trying to steal third for the second out of the inning.
Back up for the second time in the seventh, Ross walked again and forced UMES to go to its bullpen again, bringing in Carter Champey in relief of Clausell. McLoughlin added a single to put Ross on third, then Alvarez walked to load the bases. Torres hit a massive bases-clearing double into the left field corner, putting Wagner up 11-1. A groundout ended the inning.
Trizuto's day ended after a lead-off triple, sacrifice fly, walk and two-run home run allowed three UMES runs to score, with senior Andrew Rucci entering with just one out to record. He induced a fly out and Wagner went into the eighth leading 11-4.
The Hawks scored their fifth run in the eighth on an odd play, with Diego Guerrero doubling after a Jonathan Rodriguez single. Guerrero was rounding second, looking for a triple, and was tagged out by Alvarez coming in from third and cutting off the throw from centerfield. After the tag, Alvarez threw home to try and catch Rodriguez, but he was called safe after a close tag from McLoughlin.
Junior Christopher Collina entered to pitch in the ninth and gave up a one-out solo home run to hot-hitting Gonzalez, stranding a pair of Hawks to end the ninth without any more damage.
Looking for a fourth consecutive NEC series win, the Seahawks are back at Hawk Stadium on Saturday, April 25 for a 1 p.m. EDT first pitch.
