BRONX, N.Y. — Wagner won its first midweek game of the season in a 3-0 shutout of Fordham, keeping the Rams off the board in a midweek contest for the first time this season.
Five pitchers combined for the shutout for Wagner, with starter Quinn Finnegan getting the win. Senior Sam Bonilla went 3.0 innings in relief, striking out five, then junior Tyler Vargas, sophomore William Grayson and junior Keith Davis each went an inning to close things out. Davis earns a save, his second of the season.
It was a three-run scoring burst in the second that put the Seahawks ahead, then the pitching staff preserved that lead for the remainder of the game. Junior Joseph Mennella worked a leadoff walk, followed by back-to-back singles from juniors Dylan Immel and Jackson Blakley to load the bases. Freshman Derek Patrissi was hit by a pitch to score Mennella, then, an out later, sophomore Jayden Alvarez sent a two-RBI single to left centerfield to score Blakley and Immel.
From there, the Rams' pitching staff settled in and shut out Wagner for the final seven frames, but the damage was done. Junior Diego Tavarez and Alvarez finished with a pair of hits each to finish at 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively. Immel lead the Seahawks with three hits. Mennella was the only Wagner player to walk during the game.
Next up, the Seahawks head to West Haven, Connecticut to take on New Haven in a pair of back-to-back road series. Game one against the Chargers will be Friday, March 27 at 3 p.m. EDT.
