Softball Splits Doubleheader with Mercyhurst; Wins Second Game on Run-Rule

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner softball team split their doubleheader against Mercyhurst on Saturday, ending the day with a 10-1 win in five innings.

The first game saw all of its runs scored in the first inning. The Seahawks plated a pair of runs in the top half of the frame when junior third baseman Sydnie Trujillo knocked a two-run single into right field. Sophomore designated player Alayna Giampolo and senior first baseman Geanice Morales both scored on the play.

Wagner entered the bottom half of the inning with a 2-0 lead, but quickly allowed a bases loaded situation with just one out. The Lakers cashed in with a two-run double sandwiched in between two fielding errors, and took a 4-2 lead after the inning was over. All four of Mercyhurst's runs in the inning were unearned.

The score remained unchanged through the rest of the game, despite the Seahawks getting the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning. They would strand all three runners, and ultimately drop the first game of the day, 4-2.

Wagner wasted no time getting on the board again in game two. The clean-up hitter Trujillo again collected the first RBI for the Seahawks, on a base hit to center field. Sophomore right fielder Taylor Reynolds came up as the very next batter, and knocked in two more runs on a single up the middle. Freshman starting pitcher Samantha Lotus kept the Lakers bats quiet in the first inning, then the Seahawks exploded for five runs in the top of the second.

Trujillo came through again, collecting two more RBIs on another base hit. She would finish the doubleheader with four hits and six RBIs. Two batters later, sophomore left fielder Lilly Banse cleared the bases with a 3-run double, extending the Seahawk lead to 8-0. All five runs in the inning were unearned, and they all came with two outs.

After each team traded a run in the third inning, the Seahawks plated one more run in the fifth, and won the back-end of the doubleheader 10-1, in five innings. Lotus picked up the win after finishing the shortened game with seven strikeouts, and zero walks.

The Seahawks will return to the diamond on Sunday, March 22 at the Mercyhurst Softball Field for the final game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
