ERIE, Pa. — The Wagner College softball team won 10-0 against Mercyhurst on Sunday, taking the last two game of the series.
Junior starting pitcher
Karson Zavala bounced back from her loss on Saturday, and started the game pitching three scoreless innings. The Mercyhurst starter matched her and the game remained scoreless through the first three innings.
The Seahawks broke through in the fourth inning, when junior second baseman
Leilani Gonzales singled in a run, then an error by the right fielder allowed everyone to advance another base, which allowed another run to score, giving Wagner the 2-0 lead.
Those were the only runs in the game up until the last inning, when the Seahawks sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh inning, scoring eight runs on just six hits in the frame. During the inning, freshman
Zoe Totaro picked up two hits, knocked in three runs, and stole home to provide four of Wagner's eight runs.
Zavala took the mound in the next half inning, and set down the Lakers in order to complete the 10-0 victory. She would finish the day with seven strikeouts, while only giving up four hits and one walk.
Wanger will return to the diamond when it takes on Stony Brook for a doubleheader at the Wagner Softball Field on Tuesday, March 24. The first game will start at 2 p.m., and the second game will start at approximately 4 p.m.
