Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif. — Wagner Softball dropped its first game of the season after losing 11-3 against UC Sand Diego in five innings.
The game started promisingly, as the Seahawks batted around the order and scored three runs in the top of the first. Senior left fielder
Lea Rachal got the scoring started after she reached on an error, allowing sophomore DH
Alayna Giampolo to cross the plate. Junior third baseman
Sydnie Trujillo knocked in a run on a ground out, and junior second baseman
Leilani Gonzales walked in the third run of the inning, but the inning ended with the bases still loaded.
UCSD wasted little time coming back. After scoring a run in the first inning, the Tritons plated five more runs in the second inning, capped off by a two-run single. Junior starting pitcher
Karson Zavala would surrender another run in the third before being pulled with seven earned runs and nine hits allowed.
Tritons pitchers didn't allow a run after the first inning, and oly gave up two more hits. The game ended in the fifth after an RBI-double scored the 11th Triton run, giving them an eight-run lead and the mercy-rule victory.
The Seahawks will return to the field on Friday, Feb. 6 for two games. The first game will be against Montana at 2 p.m. EST, and the second game will be a rematch against the Tritons at 7:30 p.m. EST.
