STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Wagner takes home eight total medals, including two gold, in a third-place finish at the NEC Indoor Championship that saw the team score 92 total points.
Wagner finishes with two gold, two silver and four bronze medals, scoring 92 points to finish behind conference champion CCSU with 141 and second-place Stonehill with 104. The Seahawks accumulated their points via 31 sprint points, 25 from jumps, 16 from distance events, 14 in the relays and six from throws.
The biggest performances of the day came from freshman Noah Grant, who was named Most Valuable Rookie on the men's side. He won the 200m final with a 21.39 time for his first gold as a Seahawk. He also finished fourth in the 60m with a 6.89 time. Joining senior Dante Rodney, freshman Julio Tatis and freshman Chase Rogers in the 4x400 relay, Grant ran the anchor leg to clock in at 3:17.85, good for a silver medal.
Sidelined due to injury for a majority of the season and only competing in fourth meets before the championships began, senior Julio Martinez competed and defended his pole vault title. The Madird, Spain native cleared 4.65m on Monday afternoon to win gold and finish first of eight competitors. Sophomore Amir Shokry finished in fifth alongside Martinez, clearing 4.25m and adding four team points.
In addition to the golds from Grant and Martinez and the silver from the relay, Tatis also took home silver in the 400m with a 48.33 time. This is his first time competing in indoor season and, splitting time with football as a dual-sport student-athlete, just his second meet this season. Tatis also finished fourth in the 200m with a 21.87 time.
Three of Wagner's four bronze medals were won on Sunday.
Senior Christopher Milillo took third in weight throw with an 18.44m throw, 0.54m behind New Haven's Jimmy Oreste. Junior Khalid Brown logged a 7.02m long jump to take Wagner's second field medal of Sunday, also adding a 13.26m triple jump on Monday to finish in tenth. Sophomore Ty Lawless added a 12.96m triple jump to finish 12th. Graduate Florian Hinry, a workhorse for the Seahawks at this meet, finished third in the 3,000m. Hinry also finished fifth in the mile final on Monday, running a 4:18.57 time.
The distance medley relay team — made up of junior Eric Marquez, junior Nigel Boboli, sophomore Ignacio San Juan and Hinry — ran a 10:20.35 race to finish in third place and earn the team's eighth medal.
In the 5,000m, graduate Justin Morris ran a 14:42.15 time to finish fifth, sticking with the lead back for the duration of his race. Senior Alex Taddeo ran a 6.98-second 60m time to finish just off the podium. Another dual-sport athlete, senior Franklin Simms finished tenth in the shot put Monday afternoon, logging a 14.41m throw.
This will be the team's final meet of indoor season. Next up, the Seahawks have roughly a month off competing before their outdoor season begins.
