CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Wagner fell to Virginia in its 2026 opener, dropping game one of the series 13-7 with six newcomers making their debut for the Seahawks.
Graduate Lukas Torres kicked off his sixth year with trademark consistency, going 2-of-4 with an RBI, a walk and two runs scored. Batting second behind Torres, Mazzotta had a multi-hit game as well. He went 2-of-5 with two RBIs. The top three hitters in the lineup accounted for half of the Seahawks' hits.
Juniors Dylan Immel, Evan McRae and Omar Carreras each recorded their first hits as Seahawks, with McRae accounting for a pair of RBIs. Carreras and McRae each doubled. Junior Josiah Ross made his return to the field after being sidelined for his sophomore season, going 1-for-3 as the designated hitter with a pair of runs scored.
Carreras scored Wagner's first run of 2026, touching home on an RBI single from Torres in the second. Mazzotta followed that with a two-RBI single to score Simeone and Ross, then McRae's two-RBI double pushed Torres and Mazzotta in. Wagner led the game 5-4 heading to the bottom of the second.
Virginia added a pair of runs, then Wagner tied things up again in the sixth when Ross scored on an error at second. A double from Tavarez pushed the Seahawks ahead 7-6, but then a seven-run sixth inning from the Cavaliers proved too much for the Wagner offense to overcome.
Senior righty Colin Trizuto got the nod for the opener, going 3.2 innings and striking out three on the way to 75 total pitches. He gave up five runs to the Cavaliers before *** entered the game to make his debut for the Seahawks. Steventon went 2.0 innings.
Closing things out for the Seahawks, sophomore William Grayson kicked off his 2026 season with a bright note, going 2.0 hitless innings and facing nine Virginia batters.
Next up, the Seahawks take on the Cavaliers on Saturday, Feb. 14 in a noon game as the first half of a doubleheader. With game three rescheduled from Sunday, Feb. 15 due to rain in the forecast, it will now be played 45 minutes after the conclusion of Saturday's first game.
