Women’s Soccer Falls to Unbeaten FDU on the Road

TEANECK, N.J. – The Wagner College women's soccer team fell to unbeaten NEC opponent FDU, 2-1, on Thursday evening at Macron Stadium.

Wagner (5-7-2, 4-2-0 NEC) faced an early deficit as FDU (8-2-3, 6-0-0 NEC) opened the scoring in the 19th minute to take a 1-0 advantage.

The Seahawks looked to respond in the 22nd minute, as junior Deirdre Meberg put a shot on goal, but the FDU goalkeeper made the save to preserve the lead.

Junior goalkeeper Abigail Marcello kept Wagner within striking distance throughout the opening half, making three saves as the Knights took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.

FDU doubled its lead in the 52nd minute to make it 2-0.

The Seahawks responded in the 60th minute, as junior Kelly Gallagher found the back of the net off an assist from junior Megan Knapp to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Wagner continued to push for the equalizer, with freshman Isabella Kilelee putting a shot on goal in the 70th minute, but the FDU goalkeeper made the save to keep the Knights in front.

FDU finished with a 15-5 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Marcello finished with five saves, while Gallagher, Meberg and Kilelee each recorded a shot on goal.

With four games remaining in the regular season, the Seahawks sit in fourth place in the NEC standings, behind FDU and Stonehill and just one point behind CCSU.

Wagner returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 25, traveling to Chicago, Ill., to face Chicago State. Kickoff is set for noon CT (1 p.m. ET).
