Women's Basketball Falls at Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Wagner College women's basketball team dropped its NEC matchup at Le Moyne by a score of 62-49 on Thursday night at Ted Grant Court.

The Seahawks (10-12, 6-5 NEC) trailed by seven at the conclusion of the first quarter. Redshirt junior Klea Kaci nailed a three pointer while junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor and sophomore Keana Foz scored two points to equal the Seahawks' seven points.

The Dolphins (6-18, 4-7 NEC) jumped out to an early lead thanks to a 87.5% (7-8) success rate from the free throw line in the opening period. Wagner committed eight turnovers in the first quarter alone while Le Moyne had four miscues over that same span.

Le Moyne extended its lead to as much as 17 late in the second quarter thanks to a 17-9 advantage during the frame. At the half, Wagner trailed by a score of 31-16.

The Dolphins held a 10-4 lead in points in the paint and shot 4-9 (44.4%) from deep in the first half. Le Moyne possessed a 20-9 advantage over Wagner in the rebounding category during the first 20 minutes of play.

Wagner shot 5-21 (23.8%) during the first half including 2-11 (1.82%) from three. The Seahawks were led by Kaci with six first half points on a pair of three point field goals. Doyinsola Modesayor trailed with four first half points.

In the third quarter, the Green & White scored 20 points on 7-14 (50.0%) from the floor while Le Moyne scored 18 points on 5-9 (55.5%) shooting. Wagner cut slightly into Le Moyne's lead to trail 49-36 at the end of the third. 

Doyinsola Modesayor and senior Angélie Ricard both scored six points to go along with two rebounds in the third. 12 of Wagner's 20 points were scored in the paint compared to only six paint points for Le Moyne.

The Seahawks and the Dolphins both scored 13 points in the final quarter as Le Moyne prevailed with a 13-point victory at home. Doyinsola Modesayor led all Seahawks with 15 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Kaci added 11 points while Ricard and senior Irene Fernandez de Caleya chipped in eight points each.

As a team, Le Moyne outscored Wagner 16-7 in fastbreak points. 

Next up, Wagner heads to CCSU for a 4 p.m. tip-off at Detrick Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 7.
