Women's Basketball Falls Short in Hard Fought Battle Against FDU

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Wagner College women's basketball team fell to 2-3 in NEC play after a 56-46 loss to the FDU Knights at the Spiro Sports Center on Thursday night.

The Seahawks (6-10, 2-3 NEC) battled for four quarters but came up ten points short against the defending conference champions. After a defensive first half that ended in a 17-17 tie, the Seahawks took a 32-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

After three quarters of action, redshirt senior Priscila Varela led the Seahawks offense with 13 points on 5-10 (50.0%) from the field.

The Knights (14-4, 5-0 NEC) shot 6-10 (60.0%) from the floor and 12-13 (92.3%) from the foul line in a 26-point fourth quarter, outscoring Wagner 26-14, to earn the program's 24th consecutive NEC regular season victory.  

FDU turned 20 Wagner turnovers into 20 points, meanwhile the Seahawks could only score 10 points off turnovers throughout the game. The Knights outscored the Seahawks 9-4 in points off turnovers in the fourth. 

Junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor ended the game as leading scorer for Wagner with 14 points to go along with six rebounds. Modesayor put in six of her points during the fourth. Varela finished with 13 points as senior Irene Fernandez de Caleya scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds. 

As a team, Wagner shot 15-44 (34.1%) from the floor and 15-17 (88.2%) from the charity stripe, setting a new season-best in the category.

Next up, the Green & White host NEC newcomer New Haven on Saturday, Jan. 17 for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off at the Spiro Sports Center.
