STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Wagner College women's basketball team climbed to 3-3 in conference play after taking down conference newcomer New Haven by a score of 50-45 on Saturday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.
The Seahawks (7-10, 3-3 NEC) were led by redshirt junior Klea Kaci who scored nine of her team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter, shooting 87.5% (7-8) from the foul line in the period.
After New Haven ended the third period with a 30-29 lead, senior Maria Doreste hit a three-pointer to make it a 32-30 game in favor of the Seahawks. Wagner never looked back, outscoring New Haven 18-15 for the remainder of the final period to prevail by five points.
The Chargers (5-12, 3-3 NEC) led by one at the conclusion of the third period, but allowed the Seahawks to shoot 6-10 (60.0%) from the floor while only shooting 3-9 (33.3%) as a team.
New Haven out-rebounded Wagner, 44-25, including a 16-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. However, the Seahawks forced 27 Charger turnovers and outscored New Haven 19-2 in points off turnovers.
The Seahawks were lifted by their bench that scored 26 points to New Haven's 14 points that came from its bench unit.
Behind Kaci, junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor scored nine points while sophomore Keana Foz added six points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
For the Chargers, junior Merit Innocent led with 15 points and 11 rebounds while senior Aniya McDonald-Perry added eight points and 14 rebounds.
Next up, Wagner completes a three-game homestand against Le Moyne on Thursday, Jan. 22. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Spiro Sports Center.
