Bridgewater, NJ - The Wagner College women's lacrosse team earned the Northeast Conference (NEC) Spring Team Sportsmanship award announced by the conference Wednesday morning.
The Seahawks' women's lacrosse team joins the Wagner College men's swimming & diving team as the other program to represent the Green & White that was tabbed with the conference's Team Sports Award.
Instituted by league Presidents in 2008, the awards are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
Since the NEC Team Sportsmanship program was instituted in 2008-09, Saint Francis U has won a conference-best 53 awards, followed by Wagner and CCSU (35) and LIU (31).
"Our sportsmanship awards program serves as a meaningful reminder that how we compete is just as important as the results on the scoreboard," said NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris. "Each of these teams earned the respect of their peers by consistently demonstrating what it means to compete with character and integrity. We are proud to honor those who embody the spirit of fair play."
Wagner completed the season with an 8-7 overall record and a 8-1 mark in conference play. With a conference win percentage of 88.9%, the Seahawks set a new program-record in the category while earning a share of the NEC's regular season title for the third time in 28 seasons.
Also a first for the program, three different Seahawks were selected as the NEC's Defensive Player of the Week during the same season - Murphy, Skowronski, and Rooney.
The Green & White had one recipient of the conference's Player of the Week honor. On Saturday, April 26, Siverson scored five goals, caused three turnovers, and collected one ground ball on six shot attempts in the Seahawks' 11-10 overtime victory against NEC newcomer Mercyhurst to earn a share of the NEC's regular season crown for the third time in program history.
