Track & Field Gearing Up For NEC Outdoor Championships

Staten Island, NY — Wagner has arrived at the culmination of its outdoor track and field season with the Northeast Conference Outdoor Championships and both teams are looking to build on second-place finishes from the 2024 meet.

The women's team made a big jump in last season's meet, sitting fifth after day one and ultimately finishing in second, scoring 141.50 points. They are coming off a record-high team score in the indoor championships where they earned the program's first NEC indoor title on the women's side.

Looking back to the 2024 championships. Wagner's first-place 4x800-meter relay team returns all four members, with junior Laura Trenado, junior Angelina Olah, senior Gia Comerford and sophomore Magui Calvo-Jorge competing together throughout the 2025 outdoor season.

Trenado is looking for individual gold after taking home silver and bronze in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs, respectively. Comerford will also be defending the 3,000-meter steeplechase title, Wagner's first ever gold in the event.

Senior Ruth-Ann Chambers has two individual gold medals from last season after winning the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. After putting up big numbers to boost the team score tremendously during the indoor championships, Chambers has proven she can be a big contributor on the scoreboard.

Sophomore June Fernandez win the 400-meter dash and 200-meter dash for two meals of her own, as well as joining Chambers in two gold-medal finishes in the relays.

Chambers led off the 4x100-meter relay, followed by Fernandez, senior Janee' Patterson and junior Victoria Gontowicz to win with a 47.55-second time. Another group of four returning to defend their title, Chambers, Fernandez, Patterson and sophomore Angel Okafor won the 4x400-meter relay for Wagner.

In the field events, sophomore Dayana Rodriguez finished fourth in hammer throw at the 2024 championships with a personal-best 47.86-meter throw, looking to grow on that in 2025. Freshman Mia Petersen earned Most Valuable Performer honors at the indoor championships, a newcomer who can contribute for the Seahawks in long jump, triple jump or both.

The men's team finished second in the NEC Indoor Championships in February, earning four individual titles and posting a 140-point team score. At last season's outdoor championship, the men had a 193 score to finish in second, just 3.5 points behind CCSU.

Junior Franklin Simms enters the meet as the current discus champion, logging a 51-meter throw in 2024 to win the event. Another reliable presence in the field events, junior Julio Martinez

Senior Kharlin Watkins had a big weekend in 2024, finishing second in long jump and winning high jump. He will be another Seahawk looking to defend an event title.

Sophomore Jack Mason is another returner in the field events who will be looking for gold — Mason finished third in triple jump.

The NEC Outdoor Championships are hosted by Stonehill in Easton, Massachusetts. The meet will begin Saturday, May 3 and wraps up on Sunday, May 4.
