Erie, Penn. — After winning the series opener by just one run, the tide swung the other way on Saturday and Wagner lost game two to Mercyhurst 3-2 in a ten-inning contest.
Both teams were hitting fairly even, with Wagner notching eight to the Lakers' seven. The Seahawks' pitching staff did well to shut down a majority of the Mercyhurst lineup, with all of the Lakers' hits coming from the top four hitters in the order. Both teams were throwing strikes as well, with just four walked batters through the entire game.
Wagner, on the other hand, dispersed its hits well. The top three in the order in Lukas Torres, Nicholas Mazzotta and Diego Tavarez combined for five hits, but then senior Bryce Phelps and graduate Xavier Ulrich added a hit apiece from fifth and sixth in the order, respectively. Hitting eighth, senior Mateo Matthews added a hit as well.
The Lakers started Jacob Bazala, whose nine-inning, 123-pitch outing was to blame for the Seahawks' quiet day on offense. Holding Wagner scoreless through three, sophomore Tavarez scored in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Joseph Mennella after leading off the inning with a single and advancing all the way to third on a passed ball and wild pitch.
In the fifth, Wagner tacked on one more run with more defensive issues on the Lakers. Torres worked a two-out walk, then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error from the catcher. A double from Mazzotta scored him, which gave the Seahawks a 2-1 lead. Mercyhurst went on to add a single run in the seventh that went unanswered and the game went to the tenth after sophomore Keith Davis was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth.
Wagner was able to put a runner on in the tenth, but could not score on that opportunity. The Lakers, in the bottom of the frame, worked two singles to put a runner at third and were able to put the winning run on the board with a passed ball.
The series will come down to a 1 p.m. EST matchup in game three on Sunday, April 27.
