Erie, Penn. — Closing out a road weekend for the Seahawks, Wagner fell 7-5 to Mercyhurst in Sunday's game three to drop the series.
This is just the second series Wagner has lost this season, the last coming five weeks ago against LIU.
The Seahawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead that held for five innings, adding a third run in the top of the sixth before the Lakers finally got on the board. Junior Heitaro Hayashi started for Wagner and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three Mercyhurst batters.
To open the game, graduate Lukas Torres reached on an error and stole second, then scored on a double from sophomore Diego Tavarez. A single from senior Bryce Phelps pushed Tavarez home.
Scoring again in the sixth, the Seahawks added a run after junior Nicholas Mazzotta reached on a fielders' choice then stole second and third, scoring an unearned run on a catcher error to make the lead 3-0. The Lakers added three runs in the bottom of the sixth, then Wagner answered in the seventh with two runs scored on four singles.
It was all Mercyhurst from there, though, and the Lakers added four runs in the eighth to secure the win.
Torres led the team with three hits, one run and an RBI, with freshman Matt Sutera finishing as the other Seahawk with multiple hits, finishing 2-of-4 with a run and an RBI. Seven Wagner batters notched a hit for a team total of five.
Next up, the Seahawks will have a midweek game at Penn on Wednesday, April 30 for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
