Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's lacrosse team fell to the Northeast Conference (NEC) affiliate member VMI by a score of 13-12 on a sun-splashed Hameline Field on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the game, 11 seniors - Xander Bauguess, Jake Nelson, Conor Julich, Daniel Mercado, Nate Yi, Dylan Haase, Ethan Sieb, Carson Skinner James Rea, Quin Hoke, and Pat Caldwell were honored for their accomplishments and career during their time on Grymes Hill.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Wagner Seahawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead before VMI scored its first goal with 6:33 remaining in the opening frame.
Sophomore Danny McMahon and junior Jake Mitchell were responsible for the Green & White's initial two goals.Â
The duo lead the Seahawks in total points this season. Mitchell holds a slight edge over McMahon, as Mitchell has scored 15 goals and added 12 assists to give himself 27 points on the year while McMahon has scored 22 goals and tallied two assists this season to earn himself 24 total points.
VMI would take a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter.Â
After the Keydets struck first in the second, freshman Sean Sanchez connected on his first goal of the contest to make it a 4-3 game with just under ten minutes left in the frame.
Mercado took a faceoff win straight to the back of the net, seven seconds after a VMI goal, to make it a 5-4 contest with just under nine minutes left in the second quarter.
McMahon evened the contest a five less than a minute late for his second score of the game.Â
VMI would outscore the Seahawks, 2-0, after McMahon's second quarter goal to lead 7-5 heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, VMI would extend its lead to four thanks to three consecutive goals for the Keydets early in the frame.
In the same period, Danny McMahon scored his third goal of the game to record his fourth hat-trick of his sophomore year.Â
McMahon would find Sanchez with 58 seconds left in the third to make it a 11-7 game prior to the third quarter horn.
In the final period of play, sophomore Ian Muchineuta setup McMahon for his fourth goal of the day to make it an 11-8 contest.
VMI and Wagner traded goals back-and-forth for the next seven minutes, with both sides scoring two goals a piece. For the Seahawks, seniors Patrick Caldwell and Ethan Sieb scored their first goals of the day in the middle of the fourth quarter.
VMI's Dayton Bagwell made it a 13-10 game with just over seven minutes remaining.Â
Wagner scored two more goals thanks to Caldwell and Sanchez, but could not find the third goal needed to force overtime, as the Keydets prevailed over the Seahawks, 13-12.Â
For Sanchez, the Santa Ana, CA native earned his first hat-trick of his collegiate career, and has accounted for seven points in his last two games, scoring five goals with two assists.
Defensively, junior Nico Kross collected five ground balls as sophomore Colin Sabia caused two turnovers and picked up three ground balls. Yi played the entirety of the game in goal for the Seahawks, saving 13 shots to bring his season total up to 46 saves.Â
Next up, the Seahawks will conclude their 2025 regular season at conference newcomer Mercyhurst on Saturday, April 26 in Erie, PA. Opening face-off is scheduled for 11:00 am.
