Softball Splits Doubleheader Against FDU

Hackensack, NJ - The Wagner College softball team split a doubleheader against NEC rival FDU on Saturday, March 29.

Game 1: FDU 3, Wagner 2


In game one, the Seahawks struck first in the top of the second inning. With freshman Emma Rocha on first and sophomore Lea Rachal on third, sophomore Leilani Gonzales singled to drive in Rachal. Rocha advanced to third but was out at home, and the unearned run gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead.


In the top of the third inning, with freshman Alayna Giampolo on second, junior Payton Janicki doubled to center field, driving in Giampolo and extending the Seahawks lead to 2-0.

However, the Knights responded in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs to take the lead. Wagner had an opportunity to regain the lead in the top of the seventh, but was unable to capitalize, losing 3-2.

On the mound, junior Natalie Rodriguez pitched five strong innings, allowing only one run on three hits, two walks, and striking out six batters. Sophomore Karson Zavala relieved Rodriguez and pitched one inning, giving up two runs on two hits while striking out three.


Game 2: Wagner 6, FDU 5


Game two got off to a slow start, with neither team scoring in the first two innings. The Seahawks broke through in the top of the third inning. With sophomore Sammy Bolton on first and Giampolo on second, Janicki singled to center field, driving in Giampolo and giving Wagner a 1-0 lead. FDU quickly responded, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead.


The Seahawks answered back in the top of the fourth, as Gonzales doubled to left field, driving in Rachal and tying the game 2-2.

Wagner gained momentum in the top of the fifth when junior Geanice Morales doubled for a 2-RBI hit, allowing Janicki and Giampolo to score unearned runs and give the Seahawks a 4-2 lead. FDU responded with two more runs to tie the game at 4-4.

In the top of the seventh, the Seahawks made their final push. Rachal singled to center field, advancing to second on the throw, and drove in two RBI as freshman Kiera Armato and Janicki scored, putting Wagner ahead 6-4. FDU had a chance to tie or take the lead, but managed only one run, as Wagner held on for the 6-5 win.


In the circle, Zavala pitched all seven innings, allowing five hits, five runs, and striking out four batters.


Next up, the Seahawks will host St. John's at Wagner Softball Field on Wednesday, April 2nd at 2 p.m.
