Staten Island, NY — The Seahawks have now secured their third Northeast Conference series with an 8-3 win over Stonehill on Saturday.
With similar results to the first game of the series, Wagner scored its eight runs on 16 hits and held Stonehill to three runs on six hits.
On the first truly warm day of the spring, the Seahawks jumped out early and scored steadily to keep the game in hand. Stonehill started off the scoring with one run in the top of the second, but freshman Matt Sutera answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run to right field.
It was the first home run in his career as a Seahawk and the start of a massive day for the second baseman.
After the Skyhawks added another run in the top of the fifth, Wagner again answered, this time with an RBI single from senior Bryce Phelps to make it a 3-2 game. An RBI double from graduate Xavier Ulrich scored Sutera to push the lead to 4-2 in the sixth, then junior Nicholas Mazzotta pushed Ulrich and sophomore Christian Knight across with a single to the left side.
A solo shot in the eighth gave Stonehill its final run of the day, but the Seahawks were not done yet. Sophomore Diego Tavarez beat out a throw on an RBI single to the pitcher, followed by a sacrifice fly from sophomore Joseph Mennella.
Six different Seahawks recorded a hit and seven got on base. Five of those with a hit had a multi-hit game. Batting second, Mazzotta went 4-of-4 with two runs and two RBIs, adding a walk. Behind him in the lineup, Tavarez went 3-of-5 with an RBI of his own.
Mennella went 1-of-4 with an RBI, followed by Phelps hitting sixth with a 3-of-5 day. Sutera, batting seventh, was just one hit triple of the cycle, adding a single in the sixth and double in the fourth to his home run to finish with a 3-of-5 day at the play with those two RBIs.
It was another game where Wagner did not have to exhaust the bullpen, with starter Colin Trizuto going 5.2 innings and giving up just two runs in 25 batters faced. He handed the game off to junior Andrew Ravelo for an inning of work, then senior Michael Cunningham went 2.1 innings to close the game and earn his third save of the season.
Game three of the series will be played Sunday, March 30 with first pitch at 1 p.m. EST.
