Baseball Closes Out Weekend With 4-2 Win To Sweep Stonehill

Staten Island, NY — It was a quick 4-2 win over Stonehill on Sunday to give the Seahawks their third series sweep of Northeast Conference play.

Wagner took down the Skyhawks in just two hours and 48 minutes, piecing together hits and holding Stonehill off the board with efficient pitching from four arms.

Junior Heitaro Hayashi gets the win to put his record at 5-3 this season. The lefty went 6.0 scoreless innings and gave up just three hits, striking out four in his longest outing of the season.

Working through the seventh and eighth innings, sophomore Keith Davis went 1.1 innings and allowed Stonehill's only two runs of the day, then junior Jason Masick recorded the final two outs of the eighth to put the game back in the hands of the Seahawk batters.

They answered with two more runs to make it a 4-2 game, then junior Nicholas Mazzotta took the mound from shortstop where he started the game.

Facing the bottom of the Skyhawks' order, Mazzotta struck out the eight and nine hitters in Will Christopher and Ryan LeClair. Both batters went down looking and Sam Parks, the leadoff man for Stonehill, flied out to left field to end the game. The save marks Mazzotta's third of the season, with all three saves coming in the last two weeks.

Stonehill was held to just seven hits and three walks, with nine batters striking out and eight runners left stranded. Wagner scored its four runs on eight hits, with just two strikeouts.

The hits were farther between than usual but no less timely. Five Seahawks recorded a hit, with senior Lukas Torres, freshman Matt Sutera and senior Mateo Matthews finishing with two apiece.

Sutera got Wagner on the board in the fourth with an RBI double, then a single from Matthews pushed Sutera across to make it a 2-0 game. Answering Stonehill's two-run eighth inning, another RBI single from Matthews scored Sutera again. Torres followed with an RBI double that allowed pinch runner Jake Griess to score from second.

After a five-game week, the Seahawks will have no midweek games and will play at Le Moyne on Friday, April 4 to open their next NEC series. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST.
