Baltimore, Md. — With a 6-4 win at Coppin State on Sunday, Wagner swept a second Northeast Conference series and closes out the week on a five-game win streak.
Holding the Eagles to their lowest runs scored in the weekend, the Seahawks scored steadily throughout the game to turn a 3-2 lead into a 6-4 win.
With two NEC series sweeps and a win against LIU, the Seahawks are now 7-2 in conference play and sit at 12-10 on the season.
Starting pitcher Heitaro Hayashi gets the win to put him at 2-1 this season. Hayashi went 5.2 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out five. Hayashi's 1.29 WHIP is second of the Seahawks' pitching staff, just behind senior Jake Toporek's team-leading 1.09 WHIP.
Junior Nicholas Mazzotta gets his second save of the season after entering the game late to record the final out. He was productive for Wagner across the board, going 2-of-3 at the plate with a walk and two RBIs. One of those hits was an RBI double in the top of the seventh to increase Wagner's lead to 4-2, then he added a sacrifice fly to add the sixth run.
Wagner pitching staff combined to strike out five Coppin State batters and walked just four. While both teams finished with eight hits, the Seahawks were able to capitalize on the runners they had on base while the Eagles left nine on base.
Graduate senior Xavier Ulrich started the game at first base and added two of the Seahawks' eight hits, the second Wagner hitter to have a multi-hit performance on Sunday.
Sophomore Joseph Mennella's lone hit of the day was massive, a two-RBI single in the third inning that gave Wagner an early lead it would not give up.
Leadoff hitter Lukas Torres scored four runs for the Seahawks, putting himself in prime position to score considering the three hitters behind him accounted for half of the Seahawks' eight hits. Torres logged one hit and two walks, stealing four bases on the way to scoring those four runs.
Next up, the Seahawks return to SIUH Community Park for a five-game home stretch. In the first of two midweek games, the Seahawks will host St. John's for a 3:30 p.m. game on Tuesday, March 25.
