Staten Island, NY — Opening up a five-game home stretch this week, Wagner dropped the first of its two midweek games in a 6-3 loss to St. John's.
It was an eight hit night for the Seahawks where three players had a multi-hit performance, but an early lead from the Red Storm was too much to overcome. St. John's got going early, scoring five runs through the first two innings. The Seahawks, on the other hand, were getting on base but were unable to scratch runs across. Wagner left 11 batters stranded on eight hits and seven walks.
Five Wagner batters logged a hit, with senior Lukas Torres, sophomore Diego Tavarez and sophomore Joseph Mennella adding two hits each. Mennella's were especially explosive, with an RBI single in the fourth to get Wagner on the board and then lead-off home run in the sixth to make it a 5-2 game. Two of Wagner's three runs were scored on hits from Mennella.
Freshman William Grayson had a strong relief appearance through the middle of the game, entering in the top of the third and going 3.0 innings. In the outing, Grayson allowed just one hit and walked just one of the ten batters he faced. This is Grayson's second-straight three-inning appearance after he went the same distance against Seton Hall on Tuesday, March 18. In that game, he allowed just one run on two hits, stringing together two quality outings.
Entering the game after Grayson, seniors Zach Gorman and Michael Cunningham went two innings apiece to close out the game. The two combined for just one run on one hit.
Wagner's next game will be Wednesday, March 26. The Seahawks host Fordham for another 3:30 p.m. game at SIUH Community Park.
