Staten Island, NY — Wagner put up seven runs in the fourth and ultimately put up 12 unanswered to beat Iona 13-10 for back-to-back midweek wins.
It was a close 6-5 win over Seton Hall on Tuesday night and then the Seahawks needed a massive comeback to take down Iona but the take down of the Gaels means Wagner carries a pair of midweek wins into its third weekend of Northeast Conference play.
The Seahawks scored those 13 runs on 11 hits and 13 walks in 33 at bats to overpower the high-scoring Gaels. Eight different Seahawks logged a hit.
Down 10-1 going into the fourth, Wagner needed to muster some offense to stay alive. That momentum swing started in the bottom of the fourth, when senior Bryce Phelps led off the inning with a single. With that first runner on base, three walks and five hits combined to score seven runs.
A pair of two-RBI doubles from sophomore Joseph Mennella and freshman Matt Sutera scored four those those seven runs.
Heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Seahawks remained down 10-9 with six outs to work with. A walk to Phelps and a single from Mennella put runners on, then both advanced on a passed ball.
With two runners in scoring position, sophomore Connor Roche singled to second base and scored Phelps to take the lead. Sophomore Christian Knight and senior Lukas Torres each batted in insurance runs.
Hitting fifth and sixth, respectively, Phelps and Roche were the two Wagner batters with multiple hits. Phelps went 3-of-4 with an RBI and three runs. Roche went 2-of-4 with an RBI and two runs. Knight and sophomore Diego Tavarez were seeing the ball especially well, with each of the two working three walks apiece.
Called in in the top of the seventh after sophomore Griffin White ran into trouble with a runner on second, senior Michael Cunningham entered the game and recorded a groundout and fly out to get out of the inning.
In the top of the eighth, Cunningham sat down three batters in order to put the game back in the offense's hands. With a three-run cushion and three outs to record, Cunningham stayed in the game and retired the side to record the save.
In 2.2 scoreless innings, he gave up just two hits and walked one of the 11 batters he faced.
Next, the Seahawks head to Baltimore, Maryland for a weekend NEC series against Coppin State. Game one will be played Friday, March 21 at 3 p.m. EST.
