Baltimore, Md. — Wagner exploded for 13 runs in its second straight game to take a 13-9 win in its series opener at Coppin State.
The current three-game win streak marks the second time this season the Seahawks have won three straight.
Wagner jumped into the lead in the top of the first when sophomore Diego Tavarez hit his third home run of the season to right field on a full count. Tavarez scored junior Nicholas Mazzotta from second base to take a 2-0 lead.
Tavarez had massive productivity at the plate, finishing his day with three hits, a walk and three RBIs. The home run ties him with sophomore Joseph Mennella to lead the team.
It was a clinic in stacking together hits. Four more runs were scored in the fourth on three hits and two errors, then a four-run sixth was followed by three more runs in the seventh to cap off the Seahawks' scoring.
In the sixth, the Seahawk batters used four walks and two hits to score those four runs.
Coppin State made a late push in the bottom of the ninth after scoring just four through the first eight frames, but Wagner held off the offensive explosion for the win.
Of five pinch hitters Wagner sent into the game at various points, four added a hit — sophomore Leo Doyle, graduate senior Xavier Ulrich, junior Emmett Coco and freshman Jake Griess.
Ulrich added two hits in two at bats, including a two-RBI triple in the seventh to push the lead to 13-2. The Seahawks put up their 13 runs on 16 hits, working nine walks to put runners on and score in four innings.
Starting pitcher Jake Toporek threw 6.0 innings and continued his dominance from last weekend, allowing just two runs on three hits. He struck out two in a 96-pitch outing. The senior holds a 4.36 ERA through six appearances and 33.0 innings this season, good for a 1.09 WHIP.
He earned the win on Friday to put his record at 2-0 for 2025.
Game two of the series will be played March 22, beginning at 1 p.m. EST as the Seahawks look to take the series.
