Softball Drops Doubleheader Against Bucknell

Staten Island, NYThe Wagner College softball team dropped both games in its doubleheader against Bucknell on Tuesday, March 18.

Game 1: Bucknell 8, Wagner 1


In the first game, the Bucknell Bisons jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first two innings but wouldn't score again until the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, with junior Payton Janicki on first, freshman Alayna Giampolo on second, and freshman Savannah Czornomor on third, freshman Emma Rocha drew a walk, driving Czornomor home to give Wagner its first run of the game.


Bucknell responded by adding another run before scoring three more in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 8-1.


Sophomore Karson Zavala pitched five innings, allowing five hits, four runs, and striking out eight batters. Junior Dallas Garcia relieved Zavala, giving up four hits, striking out one batter.


Game 2: Bucknell 5, Wagner 2


In the second game, the Bisons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Seahawks quickly responded. With Giampolo on second, Janicki doubled to right field, driving Giampolo home to tie the score at one. Bucknell regained the lead with a run in the fourth and added three more in the sixth. Wagner answered with Janicki advancing to second and Rocha scoring on a wild pitch to make the score 5-2. The Seahawks had a chance to tie it in the seventh but couldn't capitalize, as the Bisons held on for the win.


In the circle, junior Natalie Rodriguez pitched 5.1 innings, giving up eight hits, allowing four runs, and striking out three batters. Junior Emma Crosby relieved Rodriguez, pitching 1.2 innings, giving up one hit, one run, and striking out one batter.


Next, the Seahawks will hit the road to face NEC foe Central Connecticut State in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 22.
