Staten Island, NY — The Seahawks were able to avenge a midweek loss to Seton Hall earlier in the season with a 6-5 win over the Pirates on Tuesday.
The win comes after the Seahawks lost to the Pirates 14-6 on February 25 in their first midweek game of the season. After falling to Seton Hall on its own turf, Wagner was able to return the favor at SIUH Community Park.
Three runs scored across the seventh and eighth inning were enough to secure the win for the Seahawks, with three pitchers combining to keep the Pirates off the board in the game's final three innings.
Juniors Andrew Ravelo, Jason Masick and Nicholas Mazzotta threw back-to-back-to-back scoreless innings to give the Seahawk batters a chance to win the game.
In the seventh inning, a leadoff walk from sophomore Joseph Mennella turned into a run when sophomore Connor Roche sent a double to centerfield to score Mennella.
Still down a run in the bottom of the eighth, the Seahawks were able to turn over the order and stack productive trips to the plate. Freshman Matt Sutera led off with a single, then was joined on the base path when senior Lukas Torres was hit by a pitch. Mazzotta walked and a fielder's choice from Diego Tavarez forced the Pirates' infield into a quick decision that allowed Sutera to score.
Mennella added a single to add another RBI and the Seahawks had the one-run lead needed to win the game.
It was a productive day at the plate for a lineup of Seahawks that knows how to make contact. Seven of Wagner's nine starters logged a hit and four of those had a multi-hit game. At the end of the night, Wagner's six runs were scored on 13 hits with the team batting .382 through 34 at-bats.
The infielders made a massive impact on offense. The third baseman Roche was perfect, going 3-of-3 with three RBIs. Sutera, playing second in recent games, went 2-of-4 with a run scored. Shortstop Mazzotta went 2-of-4, adding one run and a walk.
Mazzotta also closed the game on the mound to earn his first save of the season, leaving shortstop to get warm in the bullpen and entering the game to record three outs via the strikeout, ground out and foul out. Mazzotta has been a workhorse in 2025, starting in all 18 games at either second or short, adding four appearances on the mound.
Mennella built on what has been an explosive week for the sophomore, going 3-of-4 with a run, an RBI and a walk in his stat line for Tuesday, including a deep double to right field. The game's three doubles were a new season high for the Wagner batters.
Next up, the Seahawks will host Iona at SIUH Community Park for a second midweek game. The game will begin at 5 p.m. EST.
