Softball Sweeps First NEC Series Against Mercyhurst

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner softball team earned a 2-0 victory in game three over Mercyhurst, completing a weekend series sweep.

With the win, Wagner improves to 8-9 on the season and takes an impressive 3-0 lead in Northeast Conference play. This marks the Seahawks' best NEC start since 2006.

The game began with both teams unable to score, and by the sixth inning, the score remained tied at 0-0 until the Seahawks finally broke through. In the bottom of the sixth, with junior Geanice Morales on second and sophomore Lea Rachal on first, freshman Taylor Reynolds singled to left field for an RBI, bringing Morales home to score the game's first run. Rachal advanced to second on the play.

Later in the same inning, with freshman Lilly Banse on first, Kiera Armato on second, and Rachal on third, sophomore Brityn Buchanan walked, driving in Banse to advance to second and Armato to third, which allowed Rachal to cross the plate for a 2-0 lead. The Lakers had one final chance to respond in the top of the seventh inning but were unable to score, as Wagner sealed the 2-0 win.

In the circle, sophomore Karson Zavala pitched all seven innings, allowing just four hits and no runs, while striking out eight batters.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Tuesday, March 18, when they host Bucknell for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
