Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's lacrosse team competed in its first Northeast Conference (NEC) game of the 2025 season against the Cleveland State Vikings on Hameline Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead midway through the opening period, senior Daniel Mercado, sophomore Danny McMahon, junior Jake Mitcehell, and sophomore Colin Sabia were responsible for Wagner's first four scores.
The Vikings would respond with a run of their own, scoring three unanswered goals to tie the game at four with 2:55 remaining in the opening frame.Â
To end the first quarter, Danny McMahon scored his second goal of the contest, and his seventh in the last six quarters of game action. Junior Smith Callaghan added his second goal of the year with 14 ticks remaining in the first to extend Wagner's lead, 6-4.
The Green & White collected more ground balls than the Vikings in the first quarter by a margin of 11 to 5, while earning nine face-off victories compared to Cleveland State's two.
In the second quarter, senior Ethan Sieb notched his team-leading tenth goal of the 2025 year. Danny McMahon also has 10 goals on the season to co-lead the Seahawks with Sieb.Â
Both the Seahawks and Vikings scored one goal in the second quarter, as Wagner went into the halftime locker room with the lead, 7-5.
In the second half, Cleveland State outscored the Seahawks, 9-1. The Vikings chipped in four third-quarter goals and five fourth-quarter scores while Jake Mitchell scored his second goal of the game and his seventh of the season.
Cleveland State scored the final four goals of the contest to prevail over Wagner, 14-8.
For the second consecutive game, senior Nate Yi got the start in goal. After 16 saves against NJIT, Yi recorded 10 saves and one ground ball. On the year, Yi has rejected 33 shots on 102 shots faced this season.
Over the course of the game, the Seahawks collected 29 ground balls to Cleveland State's 22, while earning 16 face-off wins to the Vikings' nine.
Next up, Wagner will travel to Moon Township, PA for a meeting with Robert Morris on Saturday, March 22. Opening face-off is scheduled for noon.
