Baseball Walks Off Series Finale Against Merrimack

Staten Island, NY — Wagner baseball earned its first series win on Sunday with a 6-5 walk-off win over Merrimack.

The first weekend for the Seahawks at home marks their first series win of the 2025 season, the first home series win and the second walk-off win through six games. Wagner sits at 3-3 through the first two weekends of the young season.

After splitting Saturday's doubleheader, the Warriors got their offense going steadily, taking a 4-1 lead through the game's first seven innings. The Seahawks needed some life to get back into the game and that momentum came courtesy of a solo home run from Jeremy Delamota in the bottom of the eighth inning. Down 5-2 going into the bottom of the ninth, the Seahawks immediately capitalized on that energy when Bryce Phelps hit a leadoff single and Joseph Mennella followed with a walk. A wild pitch advanced both runners, then a single from Connor Roche scored Phelps and put Mennella at third.

A pitching change for the Warriors came too late, with Luke Linnehan inheriting the two runners. Pinch hitter Christian Knight worked a walk to load the bases and after Linnehan struck out one batter, a two-RBI single from Lukas Torres tied the game at 5-5 and kept two runners on base.

Nicholas Mazzotta and Diego Tavarez kept the line going with a single and walk, respectively. With the game down to the final out after Matt Sutera struck out and Jake Griess was caught at third on the Mazzotta single, catcher Xavier Ulrich stepped to the plate with a 5-5 game, two-out game on his hands. He sent a single through the left side, bouncing past both the shortstop and third baseman and Torres rounded third to score the game's winning run.

Colin Trizuto went 4.1 innings and threw 88 pitches while giving up just three runs before he handed the game over to lefty Heitaro Hayashi, who went the final 0.2 innings to close out the fifth giving up no hits. Christopher Collina was clutch at the end of the game when it mattered most, going 3.0 innings and facing 12 batters, giving up just two hits and one run on a solo home run where the Warriors were able to answer Delamota's long ball.

Sutera went 3-of-10 against the Warriors, accounting for two runs and two RBIs. At shortstop, he logged six assists through three games against Merrimack, including two double plays. Mazzotta is currently riding a five-game hit streak dating back to February 14 against Indiana State. At the plate he went 4-of-11, accounting for one run and two RBIs. On defense, he recorded five assists and six putouts, helping out on two double plays in game three.
