South Orange, NJ — Wagner dropped its first midweek game of the season at Seton Hall in a 14-6 loss on Tuesday night.
Coming into the game at 3-3, the Seahawks had earned their first series win over the weekend after hosting Merrimack and going 2-1. The Pirates' bats started hot and stayed hot, with too much early offense for Wagner to overcome — they scored in each inning until the seventh and logged 17 total hits. The Seahawks first scored in the third with one run, then added four in the seventh and one more in the eighth.
They totaled six hits, with the top of the order bringing the most life at the plate. Lead-off hitter Lukas Torres went 2-of-4 with a walk, logging three runs. Left fielder Diego Tavarez added a hit of his own while hitting third, with catcher Christian Knight adding a hit in the four hole after taking over for Xavier Ulrich behind the dish. Freshman Jake Griess entered the game at second base and worked a walk in one of his two trips to the plate, which went on to be the first run scored in that four-run seventh inning.
When the Pirates' pitching showed weakness, they struggled to find the strike zone. Eight different Wagner batters worked a walk for 11 total walks issued during the game. Second baseman Nicholas Mazzotta was hitting second and worked two walks, despite ending a five-game hit streak, and was one of three Seahawks to walk multiple times.
It was Jordan Merot on the mound that Wagner was able to ambush in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits and three walks before he was removed from the game. He pitched 0.2 innings and was followed by Connor Byrne, who gave up one run on one hit in 1.1 innings pitched.
Next up, the Seahawks head south again for a series against Winthrop beginning Friday, February 28. This three-game stretch will be the team's final non-conference series before Northeastern Conference games begin March 7 against Norfolk State.
