Rock Hill, SC — The Seahawks showed promise late in the game but were unable to mount a comeback, losing 13-5 in the series opener against Winthrop.
Wagner was on the board first with a solo home run from senior Xavier Ulrich, who sent a deep shot over the left field wall, but it took some time for the bats to heat up. The Eagles got off to a strong start, putting up 11 runs through the first five innings.
Senior Bryce Phelps stayed hot at the plate with a 2-of-3 day, including a double and he added 2 RBIs. He is averaging .481 through eight games this season.
Wagner's batters got going late in the game, logging eight total hits and four RBIs, with Ulrich going 2-for-3 including his home run. Each of the Seahawks' first four hitters — senior Lukas Torres, junior Nicholas Mazzotta, sophomore Diego Tavarez and Ulrich — recorded a hit.
The Seahawks were able to string together multiple hits in the seventh inning, with three runs on four hits to finally chase the Eagles' starter Connor Harris from the game.
Senior starting pitcher Connor Hayden took his first loss of the season, now with a 2-1 record, throwing 3.2 innings and giving up eight runs through 23 batters faced. Junior lefty Heitaro Hayashi entered the game in relief and went 1.2 innings, giving up three runs. Senior Zach Gorman closed the game in 2.2 innings, giving up five hits and just two runs.
The Eagles were making contact at the plate, with lead-off man Gabe Natividad going 3-of-4 and the team's top four in the lineup combining to go 8-of-17.
With just three pitchers used in Friday's game, the Seahawks did not drain much out of the bullpen, which sets up well for games two and three.
The two teams return to the diamond on Saturday for a 2 p.m. EST matchup.
