STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Wagner College women's basketball team travels to A10 member Rhode Island for a Friday morning tip-off on ESPN+. The Seahawks-Rams matchup is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Thomas M. Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I.
The Emergence Of Irene
Senior Irene Fernandez de Caleya has scored at least 10 points and grabbed four rebounds in each of her last four games. On the season, Fernandez de Caleya is averaging 8.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 0.8 steals while shooting a team-high 37.5% from beyond-the-arc.
Doy Continues To Impress
Junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor was named an NEC Prime Performer for the second time this season after scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds in Wagner's 46-34 win at Rider. On the season, Modesayor has recorded two double-doubles and leads the Seahawks in points scored (10.7), rebounds (6.0), and blocks (0.8) per game.
Seatbelt Squad
Wagner recorded 17 steals last time out at Rider, the most steals in one game since December 1, 2008 when the Seahawks stole the ball 18 times against Colgate. Against Rider, sophomore Keana Foz and redshirt senior Priscila Varela combined for nine steals thanks to a suffocating full-court defense. The Seahawks' 17 steals is the most by an NEC school against any Division I opponent this season.
The Series
This is the first time meeting between these two programs. The winner of Friday's game will have a 1-0 all-time series lead over the other.
Scouting Rhode Island
Coming into Friday's game, the Rams possess a 9-2 overall record with a 1-0 record in A10 play. Sophomore Palmire Mbu leads Rhode Island in points per game (13.6), rebounds per game (6.8), and blocks per game (1.8). Senior Brooklyn Gray follows closely at 13.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, while guard Vanessa Harris is the third Ram scoring in the double-digits at 12.5 per contest. Among other A10 teams, Rhode Island ranks first in their conference in scoring defense (54.6), scoring margin (14.2), and turnovers committed per game (11.9).
A Win Would..
A Seahawks' win would grant Wagner back-to-back wins for the first time since the 2024-25 season when Wagner defeated Chicago State on February 22 by a score of 58-52 before taking down LIU on February 27, 66-58, with both wins coming at the Spiro Sports Center.
The Remainder Of 2025…
The Green & White wrap up their 2025 non-conference slate hosting NJCU on December 30 at 2:00 p.m. at the Spiro Sports Center.
