Women's Basketball Falls at Rhode Island in Penultimate Non-Conference Matchup

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Wagner College women's basketball team dropped its penultimate non-conference game of the 2025-26 season by a score of 72-36 to A10 member Rhode Island on Friday morning.

Rhode Island (10-2, 1-0 A10) built a double-digit lead less than five minutes into the game, leading 17-6 with 5:05 remaining in the opening frame. Wagner (3-7, 0-0 NEC) closed the gap to single digits by the conclusion of the period. After 10 minutes of action, the Rams held a 21-12 advantage over the Seahawks.

In the second quarter, Rhode Island benefitted from points off turnovers, winning the category 11-2 during the frame. 

The Rams shot 5-14 (35.7%) from the floor while the Seahawks put up a shooting clip of 2-12 (16.7%) in the second. At the half, Rhode Island possessed a 39-16 lead over Wagner.

For the Green & White, senior Irene Fernandez de Caleya, senior Hawa Balde-Camara, and redshirt senior Priscila Varela led the way with four points each. Senior Raneem Elbarky and junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor both chipped in two points in the first half.

Rhode Island further extended its lead in the third quarter after outsourcing Wagner during the frame, 18-6. Varela added four more points with senior Angelie Ricard scoring her first basket of the contest with less than one minute remaining in the quarter. After 30 minutes, Rhode Island held a 57-22 lead.

The Seahawks battled in the fourth, scoring 14 points to the Rams' 15, with 10 of Wagner's points coming off of the bench. 

Wagner shot 6-15 (40.0%) from the floor in the closing frame while Rhode Island shot 4-19 (21.1%) during the same span. In the end, the Rams prevailed with a wire-to-wire win by a score of 72-36. 

Varela led all Seahawks' scorers with eight, followed by Doyinsola Modesayor with seven and nine rebounds, Balde-Camara added six, Elbarky, Ricard, and Fernandez de Caleya scored six each, as redshirt junior Klea Kaci nailed a three-pointer in the fourth quarter to finish with three points.

Next up, Wagner wraps up its 2025-26 non-conference slate by hosting NJCU at the Spiro Sports Center on Tuesday, December 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Grymes Hill
