NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Wagner College women's basketball team fell to Ivy League member Columbia by a score of 82-42 at Levien Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks (2-6, 0-0 NEC) trailed by seven at the end of the first quarter, even with an 8-14 (57.1%) success rate from the floor. The Lions (6-4, 0-0 Ivy League) responded with a shooting clip of 10-15 (66.7%) from the field in the first quarter.
Senior Irene Fernandez de Caleya led the Seahawks with seven out of the team's 17 points to go along with two assists and one rebound.
In the second quarter, Columbia shot 9-12 (75.0%) from the floor to take a 46-24 lead after 20 minutes of action.
For the Seahawks, Junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor and Fernandez de Caleya led the Wagner offense with eight points each. Columbia shot 5-11 (45.5%) from beyond-the-arc while outscoring the Seahawks by eight in the paint, 26-18.
In the second half, the Lions increased their lead thanks to a 20-4 advantage in points off of turnovers in the final 20 minutes of game action.
At the conclusion of four quarters, the Lions prevailed after outsourcing the Seahawks 36-18 in the second half. Columbia's hot shooting continued into the third and fourth quarters, as the Lions shot 14-27 (51.9%) during the span, compared to Wagner's 6-23 (26.1%) success rate from the field.
Fernandez de Caleya led all Seahawks scorers with 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Sophomore Keana Foz scored nine points, Modesayor scored eight, and redshirt senior Priscila Varela chipped in seven points.
