POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Wagner fencing teams wrapped up a successful trip to Vassar on Sunday, finishing the invitational with eight total wins.
The men's team went 5-1 in their six matches throughout the event, starting their day with a dominant 26-1 win over Yeshiva. The Seahawks dropped their next match against Yale, but finished their day with four straight match victories, including another 26-1 win against Hunter College.
Sophomores
Emiliano Renteria (foil) and
Daniel Ojeda Buitrago (epee) each finished the event with 13 bout wins apiece. Ojeda was the only epeeist to pick up any bout victories in the loss against Yale.
The women's team started the event strong with wins against Tufts and Sacred Heart. Junior foilist
Renata Ziganova secured the victory against the Jumbos with a clutch 5-4 bout win with the team score tied at 13, one of her 11 bout wins on the day.
After dropping three straight matches to Cornell, Yale and Brown, the Seahawks rebounded and won a close 14-13 match against Wellesley. Freshman
Sydney Brock (sabre) secured a 5-0 tie-breaking win to seal the match for Wagner.
"We showed grit, determination, and tenacity today in some really tough match ups against really strong teams," said head coach
David Sierra. "We're looking forward to weekend off and then locking in for the meet at LIU in a couple of weeks."

The Seahawks will return to the strip on Sunday, November 23, when they will participate in the LIU Invitational. The event will take place at the Steinberg Wellness Center in Brooklyn, NY.
