STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Wagner College fencing head coach
David Sierra has announced the four captains for both the men's and women's teams for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
On the men's team, senior sabrist
Charlie Dolan returns as a captain for the second consecutive season. Dolan fenced in more bouts (84) than any Wagner fencer last season, and qualified for the NC Fencing Regionals with 25 wins, which included victories over top-ranked schools like St. John's and Penn.
Joining Dolan as a captain on the men's team is sophomore foilist
Jakub Vrtilek. In his first season on Grymes Hill, the Czechia native was one of five Wagner fencers to win 40 or more bouts, and just one of two freshmen. Of the three Wagner men's foilists to qualify for the NC Fencing Regionals, Vrtilek finished the highest with four wins in the first round, and two in the second round.
From the women's team, the Seahawks turn to junior sabrist
Villo Nyiri, who finished the season as the 21st-ranked women's sabrist in the Mid-Atlantic/South region. Nyiri qualified for the NC Fencing Regionals with a 32-25 record, and was one of three Wagner fencers to reach the semifinals of their respective weapons. She finished her regional appearance with eight wins throughout the first three rounds.
Finally, junior epeeist
Maria Lopez Meneses rounds out the group of captains for the 2026-27 season. The Leon, Mexico native reached the 30-win mark in the prior season, and earned nine of those wins at the Dave Micahnik Penn Invitational. Lopez Meneses qualified for NC Fencing Regionals, and reached the second round with a total of six wins throughout.
The Seahawks roster and schedule will be released at a later date.
