BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – Freshman defender Julia de Leeuw was named the NEC's Rookie of the Week after a two-goal weekend against LIU and Hofstra over the weekend.
On Friday, October 10, de Leeuw scored Wagner's first goal in the second quarter of the Seahawks conference bout with the LIU Sharks. De Leeuw received a pass from senior captain Hailey Bianchino off of a penalty corner and airlifted the ball into the cage of the net. Wagner would go on to defeat LIU, 2-1.
Two days later on Sunday, October 12, de Leeuw scored the Seahawks' second goal of their contest against CAA member Hofstra. Again off of a penalty corner, de Leeuw was set up by sophomore Erika Parker and freshman Julie Povel before finding the back of the cage to increase Wagner's lead over Hofstra, 2-0, however, the Seahawks would fall to the Pride in overtime.
During her first 13 games on Grymes Hill, the Netherlands native has scored three goals while adding two assists and two defensive saves while logging over 700 minutes thus far.
Along with de Leeuw, junior Floortje Leunisse was named an NEC Prime Performer after scoring the game-winning fourth quarter goal at LIU before scoring a penalty stroke at Hofstra, two days later.
De Leeuw is the second Seahawk freshman to earn the conference's 'Rookie of the Week' nod this season after Julie Povel was awarded the distinction after Povel put up a five-point performance (two goals and one assist) against Mercyhurst on September 28.
Next up, de Leeuw and the rest of the Seahawks (5-8, 4-2 NEC) will host Merrimack (2-11, 2-3 NEC) on Friday, October 17 as a part of their 'Pink Game'. Opening center pass is set for 3:00 pm at the Wagner College Field Hockey Complex.
