BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Wagner College field hockey team (5-7, 4-2 NEC) defeated conference rival LIU (1-11, 1-3 NEC) by a score of 2-1 at Shark Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Junior Floortje Leunisse scored her team-high sixth goal of the year early in the fourth quarter to grant Wagner a 2-1 lead. The Seahawks would ride out the remaining 10 minutes of action to win their fourth NEC game of the season.
The Sharks struck first late in the first quarter, scoring the game's first goal 13 minutes into the quarter.
Midway through the second quarter, senior captain Hailey Bianchino found freshman Julia de Leeuw on the Seahawks' first penalty corner of the game. The newcomer from the Netherlands floated a high-arching shot that landed as the equalizer.
De Leeuw currently has accounted for two goals, two assists, and two defensive saves on the season. De Leeuw is fourth on the Wagner roster in total points (six) and fourth in the NEC in defensive saves (two).
Sophomore goalkeeper Saar van Dalen earned her fifth win of the season, saving four shots on in 60 minutes to bring her season total to 65 saves.
As a team, the Seahawks took nine shots with eight on target and attempted five penalty corners. Both of Wagner's goals came off of penalty opportunities. The Sharks took seven shots with five on target and earned two penalty corner opportunities.
Next up, Wagner stays in the Empire State as the Green & White take on CAA member Hofstra on Sunday, October 12. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Cindy Lewis Stadium.
